The results of an international competition dedicated to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies in new-generation 5G networks have been summed up.

In 2020, Russia was represented at the competition held by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) by a team from the Faculty of Informatics and Robotics of USATU with the project "Traffic recognition and Long-term traffic forecasting based on AI algorithms and metadata for 5G/IMT-2020 and beyond".

The national team included students Denis Garayev, Ainaz Khamidullin, Artem Andrievsky, and Viktor Adadurov.

The students successfully coped with the task, received interesting scientific results and made it to the final. Of the 33 projects presented at the final conference, UGATU's development was among 14 awarded the ITU Certificate of Honor as a complete competitive solution.

"It wasn't a student project competition, so anyone could put together a team and take part. Among the participants were representatives of large research laboratories from Europe, the USA, China, Japan, etc

.

We have long been involved in software-defined networks, and this project is aimed at improving the efficiency of data flow management through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.

Future specialists are full of enthusiasm and look forward to new interesting contests that will allow them to put their knowledge and skills in programming, machine learning technologies, and distributed data processing into practice" - Alexey Kovtunenko, team leader, Associate Professor of the University's Computer Science Department.

For reference purposes:

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is an international organization where Governments and the private sector coordinate global telecommunication networks and services. Founded in Paris in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, ITU received its current name in 1934, and in 1947 became a specialized agency of the United Nations.

ITU includes 193 countries and more than 700 members by sector and association (scientific and industrial enterprises, public and private telecom operators, broadcasting companies, regional and international organizations).

The ITU headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland, next to the UN building.
