REC "Russian Arctic": waste in business - industry - benefit, nature - purity

"Processing of technogenic waste of enterprises as a factor of reducing the environmental burden" is the title of the fourth section of the forum "Development of the Russian Arctic in the programs of world-class scientific and educational centers", which will be held in Pomorie from November 15 to 17.

Recall that the main task of the forum is to discuss Arctic projects, the implementation of which in high latitudes is relevant today and in the near future. The work of the sections is based on the discussion of strategic tasks that the subjects of the Russian North face. One of them is the integrated use of mineral resources and man–made waste from enterprises in the Arctic zone.

There are many large production facilities in the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, as a result of which large-tonnage waste is generated. Most of them are not recycled (there are no appropriate recycling technologies) and are stored in landfills, dumps, storage facilities.

Recycling/recycling of waste from ore processing and metallurgical industries is an urgent issue for the Murmansk region. Scientists of the Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and MSTU will present at the forum the development of sorbents that absorb harmful elements of the periodic table from the soil, which emit a large amount of production.

Their Arkhangelsk colleagues from the M.V. Lomonosov NARFU will present the results of scientific research on the use of saponite-containing wastes in construction and agriculture, which are formed in the diamond mining industry.

Saponite is a mineral with unique sorption properties, i.e., by analogy with activated carbon, it is able to absorb not only moisture, but also various toxic pollutants. In addition, additives based on this mineral, the amount of which in the overburden of the diamond-bearing province of the Arkhangelsk region is huge (up to 80%), can be activators of the medicinal properties of certain medications.

It should also be noted that for several years, research has been successfully conducted on the use of saponite in agriculture as fertilizers. For example, it has been proven that the productivity of potatoes and some other agricultural crops when used

saponite-containing fertilizer increases significantly.

In construction, saponite can be used as a raw material for the production of ceramic and structural insulation materials, thermal insulation mats, as additives in concrete, etc. For example, a highly dispersed additive in concrete works as a "smart" filler - first retaining moisture, and gradually releasing it during the hardening of the solution. By doing so

by increasing the performance characteristics of concrete, increasing its frost resistance and strength, while reducing cement consumption, which reduces the cost of final products and improves the environmental situation in the region.

- The research has been carried out, the compositions have been patented, the stage of practical implementation of our developments begins, - said Maria Frolova, moderator of the section, Associate Professor of the Department of Composite Materials and Building Ecology of the Higher School of Engineering of the SAFU, – This is very important for our northern conditions.
