Perm REC will help Roscosmos in the development of the Yota wireless network using space satellites

ANO REC "Rational Subsoil Use" and JSC "Information Satellite Systems named after Academician M.F. Reshetnev" (JSC "AIS", part of the State Corporation "Roscosmos") signed an agreement on cooperation in the framework of the project "Marathon IoT".

The multi–satellite data transmission system (MSPD) "Marathon IoT" is one of the promising projects of the State Corporation "Roscosmos". It involves the creation of a constellation of 264 satellites placed in 12 orbital planes at an altitude of 500-750 km and circling the Earth 12 times a day.

The ground infrastructure of the system consists of sensors and switches that transmit a signal to satellites. The peculiarity of the equipment is that it runs on batteries and does not require a permanent connection to the power grid. Data transmission using LoRaWAN technology (not GSM) will significantly increase the signal range, as well as reduce energy consumption. As a result, the sensors can work without replacing the battery for 5-10 years.

MRTD opens up fundamentally new opportunities for a number of industries and social spheres. Based on satellite IoT , they can work and transmit signals from the most remote and hard-to-reach places to a centralized system sensors of forest fires and earthquakes, the condition of pipelines and energy infrastructure, migration of animals and icebergs, individual alarm devices (so-called "life buttons") and much more. The implementation of the project largely solves the problem of digital inequality that is relevant for Russia, taking into account the large territory of the country and different levels of Internet access. And the potential of the global IoT market based on satellite technologies is estimated at 10-12 billion dollars.

Within the framework of a prisoner with the IMIS. Reshetneva of the agreement of the REC "Rational Subsoil Use", as well as participants and partners of the Perm Polytechnic Research and Educational Center, MIP "Prognoz RNM", LLC "Telecom-Oil" and LLC "ROSSMA" will conduct developments in two directions. The first is the selection and adaptation of the IoT technology that is most suitable for the tasks of the IoT Marathon.

The second is the development of a network server of the regional interface station, one of the key elements of the infrastructure that provides the interface ground and space segments of the data transmission system.

"We appreciate the trust placed in the research teams of universities and companies included in the REC. By combining competencies, we can conduct the necessary developments at the level of advanced world technologies. And given the scale of the project, as well as its role for the strategic objectives of the state, Russian business and the social sphere, the project will be one of the priorities for the Perm REC for the next 3-5 years," said Pavel Ilyushin, Director of the ANO REC "Rational Subsoil Use".

Earlier it was reported that the formation of the Marathon-IoT satellite communications constellation will be fully completed in 2027.

At the same time, the first marathon satellite can be launched in 2023.

This concept offers a customer-oriented centralized system for collecting and processing information using LoRaWAN technology.
