The country's first production of implants made of soluble magnesium alloys will be launched with the participation of the scientific organization of the Eurasian REC

There is a huge demand for biodegradable magnesium implants. In Russia, about 5 thousand operations are performed annually with the use of German implants. Their supplies stopped due to sanctions.

The goal of the new project is import substitution.

A joint project of Togliatti State University and a Medical Trading Company (MTK) from St. Petersburg will allow replacing imported products with domestic ones.

It is planned that the developed magnesium implants will displace the currently used titanium products, since they do not need to be removed after the bone has fused. Magnesium products dissolve and are excreted from the human body, having fulfilled their function.

Participants of the consortium "New Technologies for magnesium alloys" will be involved in the organization of full-cycle production: for example,

the equipment and equipment for the launch of the site will be manufactured by the Institute of Problems of Superplasticity of Metals of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IPSM RAS), a participant of the Eurasian REC, Bashkortostan, a hydraulic press for the technical requirements for the future production of implants — OOO "Orenpress" Orenburg, and the scientific and production enterprise "Solar" from Samara will produce a drawing mill for calibration of magnesium rods.

Serial production of implants and blanks for bioresorbable implants made of magnesium alloys should begin in a year. This will be the first such production in Russia.
