So, scientists of the Ufa Petroleum Institute under the guidance of a senior researcher, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of "Oil and Gas Technology" Viktor Pavlovich Zaporin developed and mastered the technology for producing needle-shaped or anisotropic coke. The Omsk Oil Refinery became the technological base.
Needle coke is a strategic and expensive product that is produced in the United States, Great Britain, Japan and China. - the scientist commented. - The country's electrode industry had to rely entirely on imports. Industrial production of high-quality needle coke will now begin in Russia.
Coke is a hard coal baked at high temperatures in special furnaces. Ordinary coke has no directivity, and needle coke is a special grade of petroleum coke, which is characterized by a pronounced texturization and low temperature coefficient of expansion.
Needle coke is used for the manufacture of graphitized electrodes, which are used for smelting electrical steel. This technology is used to produce a third of all Russian steel, about 20 million tons. Graphite electrodes are also actively used in the nuclear and space industries.

The Association of Oil Refiners and Petrochemists (ANN) was established in May 1995.
The Association was founded by oil companies, refineries, oil refineries, research and design organizations in Russia and the CIS.
