In Perm, scientists are developing a new shielding material for the production of electronic devices

Researchers from the Institute of Technical Chemistry of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (part of the PFIC UrO RAS, member of the REC "Rational Subsoil Use") they are developing a shielding polymer material for the production of electronic devices.

The development and widespread use of technologies leads to an increase in the level of electromagnetic background, which affects both the operation of electronic equipment and the human body. Polymer materials are one of the most effective and safe options for protection against electromagnetic waves.

Scientists set themselves the task of developing a material that meets the specified properties, such as: screening efficiency SE > 10 dB, heat resistance from -

50 to +130 degrees and increased physical and mechanical characteristics. At the same time, the Institute of Technical Chemistry intends to develop a material suitable for

for the manufacture of electronic device housings by 3D printing. According to the project, the material will be a coil with a filament with a diameter of 1.75 millimeters.

Currently, there are no such materials on the domestic market. Taking into account the trend of using additive technologies in production, the development of shielding polymer composite filament is an urgent task in the field of materials science.

"As a rule, to ensure shielding properties, a special coating is applied to the housings of electronic devices either by spraying or by gluing metal foil. The material developed by us will have sufficient shielding properties without additional surface treatment, which is an advantage both in terms of the specific weight of the product, facilitating the technological process, and durability, since it will not depend on external factors such as coating defects and operating conditions," says Elena Kornilitsina, project manager, junior researcher laboratories of Structural and Chemical Modification of Polymers of the Institute of Technical Chemistry of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 2023, it is planned to obtain a polymer composite filament filled with functional additives. The result of the whole project will be a prototype printed using a 3D printer with the investigated operational properties.

To implement the project, the institute's staff received a grant from the regional competition of scientific and innovative projects "UMNIK".

It is assumed that in the future, the main buyers of the new material will be enterprises engaged in the development and manufacture of enclosures for equipment for various purposes.

Now look up from the screen for a few seconds, look around and count how many electrical appliances surround you. Each of them creates an electromagnetic field that can interfere with other devices and carries risks for the human body. To reduce this, shielding materials are used. As a rule, they are sprayed or pasted (if it is foil). Scientists of the Institute of Technical Chemistry of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are developing a new shielding the material is made of polymers. Scientists set themselves the task of developing a material that meets the specified properties, such as: screening efficiency SE > 10 dB, heat resistance from -50 to +130 degrees and increased physical and mechanical characteristics.

But that's not all – it will become a filament for 3D printing. This will allow you to print shielding enclosures for equipment on a printer, that is, to do it faster and often cheaper than now. The total weight of the devices will also decrease at the same time.
