Perm Polytechnic University has developed an eco-friendly adhesive for the production of plywood

Researchers from Perm Polytechnic University (PNRPU, participant of REC "Rational Subsoil Use") we have developed an eco-friendly adhesive composition for the production of plywood.

In the production of plywood, animal or synthetic glue is used as a connecting component for wood veneer sheets. The choice of binder is determined by the purpose of plywood.

For moisture-resistant variants, phenol-formaldehyde glue is used. The creation of wall panels inside buildings is determined by environmental requirements,

which can be performed using animal glue - casein or albumin.

— Experts have long drawn attention to cheap eco-friendly polymer materials, besides having the ability to be used for a second time,

for example, polyethylene, — says the author of the methodology, a student of the Department of Construction Engineering and Materials Science Vyacheslav Palkin. — Introduction to

the use of various additives allows you to modify the adhesive polymer. At the same time, active groups of substances appear in it, allowing to improve the quality

the adhesion of the layers and, consequently, the strength of the finished plywood.

Scientists have proposed a technology for gluing veneer with a film multilayer thermoplastic adhesive based on polyethylene and its copolymers. It consists of

several layers with different physical and chemical properties. Some layers are responsible for adhesion to wood, others provide strength

the glue itself.

— Multi-layer film adhesive can be produced by multi-layer extrusion, that is, by superimposing layers of molten material on each other, or

sequentially laying the films between the veneer layers. You can also add additional substances to it that will allow you to change the properties of the resulting plywood. At the same time, the process of pressing plywood will take place without changing the technological modes of molding, — explains Associate Professor of the Department of Construction Engineering and Materials Science, Candidate of Technical Sciences Igor Kochurov.

According to the developers of the new composition, multilayer film thermoplastic adhesive will allow creating environmentally friendly materials and construction products. They will comply with GOST 3916-2018 "General purpose plywood with outer layers of hardwood veneer".

Such plywood can be used for structural elements and structures inside buildings, for example, partitions, and furniture manufacturing.
