The participating university of the REC of the South of Russia will create an All-Russian Scientific Center for the development and production of exoprostheses

Volgograd State Medical University will take part in the creation of an All-Russian scientific center for the development and production of exoprostheses for the medical rehabilitation of disabled people and patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

President Vladimir Putin instructed to submit proposals on the establishment of the center following a press conference held on December 23, 2021. The corresponding document is published on the official portal of the Presidential Administration of Russia.

"The Government of the Russian Federation should prepare together with the Administration of the Volgograd Region and with the participation of the Federal state budgetary educational institution of Higher education "Volgograd State Medical University" of the Ministry of Health of Russia and submit proposals on the creation of an All-Russian scientific center for the development and production of exoprostheses for the medical rehabilitation of disabled people and patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system," the Kremlin website quotes the President.

Vladimir Putin appointed Mikhail Mishustin, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Andrei Bocharov, Governor of the Volgograd Region, and Vladimir Shkarin, Rector of VolgSMU, as responsible for the execution of the order. The report on the results of the execution of the order must be submitted to the President by February 20, 2022.

Recall that during a press conference on December 23, 2021 Vladimir Putin was asked about the possibility of creating the first patient rehabilitation center in Russia in the Volgograd Region using the invention of Volgograd scientists. It was about exoskeletons developed at Volgograd State Medical University.

Work on the creation of exoskeletons in the walls of VolgSMU began in 2013. The efforts of scientists were initially aimed at helping children suffering from degenerative disorders of the upper extremities and it was not even supposed that this design could be used in adults with disabilities. Over the years, the device has been modified, refined, improved and turned out to be in demand for dozens of children, and then adults from different cities of Russia and abroad.
"Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Health, the active interest of the leadership of the region in the development of science in the outgoing year, three works performed on the basis of departments, centers and laboratories of VolgSMU entered the TOP 10 best inventions of the country. Today, Volgograd exoskeletons are part of a large project that will be submitted for participation in the federal program "Priority 2030" - one of the fundamental blocks planned for protection in the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in the summer of the coming year," said Vladimir Shkarin, Rector of VolgSMU.

According to the university management, the President's attention to the projects implemented at Volgograd State Medical University will give an opportunity not only to develop the scientific field of activity, but also to provide real assistance to those who need it most. The University is ready to continue this work already at the level of a specialized center, if such a decision is made.
